Since moving from Germany to Maryland about 2 months ago, our house has been in a constant state of disaster. Boxes everywhere, clothes strewn about, nothing in its proper place, no pictures on the walls... It's not a good way to live. It makes you grouchy and stressed out. It's important for your house to be a place of peace and refuge - especially when you are coming home from a job that you hate (which is currently the case for both me AND Paul.)
The task of getting things in order was just overwhelming, and both Paul and I suffer from a serious lack of motivation (which I also blame partly on our current jobs and the way they suck the life out of us)
So this weekend my mom flew up from Houston to come help me get the house in order. I picked her up Friday night and we worked ALL DAY Saturday, most of the day Sunday and a little bit Monday morning before I took her to the airport.
We threw out about 15 huge garbage bags of stuff, put another 2 big boxes in my car to take to Goodwill, and managed to find places for everything that was left in the house. We got a few pictures hung on the walls and even put up some curtains.
Paul and I still have a lot of work to do, but the house is already a thousand times better than it was a few days ago. I don't get irritated when I walk in the front door now, so that is a huge improvement :)
So, thank you Mom :) You are the greatest and I couldn't have done it without you!!
Here are a few pics from Sunday morning when we took a break to go to the National Basilica in DC for mass. The National Basilica is the largest Catholic church in North America and is one of the ten largest churches in the world. It is simply stunning. We walked around for about an hour after mass was over and I'm certain that we still didn't see all the details. I intend to go back and take better pictures eventually - these were taken with my iPhone, so the quality isn't the best...but you can get the general idea:
Me and mom outside the Basilica

This room was breathtaking - it was wall to wall mosaics.

See the detail - I can't even imagine how long it took to complete just this one room.
The ceilings were covered in mosaics as well. This was one of my favorites with the tiny gold tiles.
A little girl next to us asked her mom, "Mommy, why is Jesus so angry?"
I was thinking...honey, it's probably because he is here in D.C. surrounded by corrupt politicians - especially ones who call themselves Catholics but go against everything the Church values. (ahem, Pelosi, Biden, Kerry, Sebilius, Kennedy, etc, etc...)
Anyhow...if you are in D.C. or ever visit D.C. please don't overlook this treasure. Even if you are not Catholic you can definitely appreciate the beautiful architecture and detail that went into making this church so gorgeous. Here's the link to their website for more info about it :)
